Phosphonate based chemistries have been used for many years in the oilfield to control or prevent scale in the production or completion system. Scale inhibitor chemicals can be continuously injected or periodically injected through what is termed squeeze treatments. Some systems even integrate scale and fracturing treatments together to guarantee the entire well is treated with scale inhibitor.
Common scale types include calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, calcium sulfate, barium sulfate, strontium sulfate, and iron.
Polyamino polyether methylene phosphonic acid or PAPEMP is one chemistry used to help prevent scale buildup. PAPEMP phosphonates can be custom produced to meet different activity, active salt, and pH requirements.
